WEATHER GUIDE

When we go outside and when we stay indoors

We watch the weather closely all year long, and we follow the guidelines below for canceling classes or moving them indoors.

DURING THE WEATHER EVENTS BELOW, CLASS WILL BE MOVED FULLY INDOORS:

  • NYC high wind advisory asking people not to enter city parks

  • Winds forecasted to be 40 MPH or more for the whole class period

  • Forecasted heavy rain and a wind chill below 35° for the majority of the class period

  • Forecasted wind chill below 10° for the whole class period

DURING THE WEATHER EVENTS BELOW, OUR OUTDOOR TIME WILL BE SHORTENED:

  • Forecasted thunderstorms, or lightning seen and thunder heard

  • Forecasted wind chill below 15°

  • Forecasted snow with winds of 40 MPH or more

  • Forecasted light to moderate rain and a wind chill below 35° for part of the class period

WHEN OUTDOOR TIME IS SHORTENED THIS COULD MEAN:

  • stopping by the library for extra reading time before going outside

  • sheltering inside or in our outdoor tent while a weather event passes

  • moving inside earlier than our normal pick-up time if a weather event occurs during class

PROTECTIONS FROM COLD, WIND AND RAIN THAT ARE A PART OF EVERY CLASS:

  • a pop-up shelter to protect from wind and cold

  • a tarp shelter to protect from warm rain

  • warm tea or cider to heat hands and insides

  • hand warmers

  • full cover rain suits

  • extra gloves and hats as needed

  • Parents supply boots, snow suits, waterproof gloves and other appropriate layers

INDOOR CLASSES INCLUDE:

  • Library Time (quiet reading, art, Legos, puppets and more at the nearest public library)

  • For Sunset Park classes, romping the halls of Industry City

  • Sipping hot cocoa or cool drinks at a local café
